Supporting Children’s Wellbeing at Leeds Children's Charity
At Lineham Farm, children are given something simple but powerful: time, space and safety. Away from daily pressures, they can breathe, play, explore nature and rediscover what childhood should feel like.
More than 1 in 4 children in Leeds is growing up in poverty. Behind that figure are children carrying adult-sized worries — shaped by instability, uncertainty, and stress that no child should have to navigate alone.
At Leeds Children’s Charity, we exist to change that experience.
This is not a holiday. It is a reset for wellbeing — emotional, social and physical.
A place where children feel safe again
For many children, Lineham Farm is the first place they feel calm.
A warm bed. Regular meals. Kind adults. Predictable routines.
These are not small things — they are the foundations of children’s mental wellbeing.
When children feel safe, everything changes. Anxiety reduces. Trust begins to build. And for the first time, they can relax enough to just be themselves.
Nature plays a vital role in this too. Open space, fresh air and time outdoors help children regulate emotions, reduce stress and reconnect with the world around them.
Outdoor learning that builds wellbeing, not just skills
Each year, around 3,000 children take part in residential and day experiences at Lineham Farm.
Through outdoor learning and accredited activities, children explore, move and learn in ways that support wellbeing, including:
- Climbing and outdoor challenges
- Woodland walks and nature exploration
- Bushcraft and team activities
- Animal care and hands-on learning
- Problem-solving and group tasks
These experiences are not just enjoyable — they are restorative.
Teachers consistently tell us they see children return to school:
- calmer
- more confident
- more able to focus
- more willing to engage with learning
- better able to manage emotions and relationships
For many children, it is the first time they experience success outside the classroom — and that changes how they see themselves.
Building confidence, connection and emotional resilience
Children facing adversity can often find trust and relationships difficult. At Lineham Farm, consistent support, clear boundaries and positive role models help rebuild that trust over time.
Through shared experiences, children begin to:
- work together
- communicate more confidently
- manage emotions
- develop resilience
- feel part of a group
These are essential life skills — not just for school, but for wellbeing into adulthood.
As confidence grows, so does hope.
Why this matters for children in Leeds
Childhood inequality doesn’t just affect individuals — it shapes schools, communities and the future of our city.
Without early support, challenges linked to poverty and trauma can continue into adulthood, impacting education, mental health and opportunity.
But when children are given safe, positive experiences early, the impact is lasting.
Children return from Lineham Farm with:
- greater confidence
- improved emotional wellbeing
- stronger relationships
- a renewed sense of possibility
That ripple effect reaches far beyond a single stay — into classrooms, families and communities across Leeds.
