Stories

Protecting the identity of the families we support is essential. While these case studies are based on real experiences, names and identifying details have been changed to ensure anonymity. Any images used are stock images, and actors are used in our video content to represent real-life situations respectfully and appropriately.

These stories reflect the lived realities experienced by many of the children we support each year.

Whatever their circumstances, our focus remains the same: to provide safe, positive experiences that restore moments of childhood, build confidence, and help children feel happy, valued and supported.

Watch our short film

Hear powerful, real-life stories from adults who once visited Leeds Children’s Charity at Lineham Farm as children, alongside reflections from teachers, parents, and our dedicated team.

Together, they explore why Leeds Children’s Charity exists and the lasting impact of residential breaks and outdoor learning experiences for children facing poverty and disadvantage across Leeds.

Meet Joe, aged 9

Joe has recently experienced the loss of his mum, a change that has had a profound impact on his family. He and his sister are now living with their dad, who has taken on full-time care while also coping with his own grief.

The family has faced significant challenges adjusting to this new reality, including financial pressures that make everyday life difficult. Opportunities for rest, time away, or shared experiences as a family are simply not within reach.

Meet Sally, aged 9

Sally is a bright, determined young girl growing up in challenging circumstances at home. At times, life can feel overwhelming, and she doesn’t always have the emotional support or stability that many children rely on.

Despite this, Sally works hard and shows real resilience every day.

She has never had the chance to go on a holiday or experience time away — something many children take for granted.

Meet Donna, aged 7

Donna lives with her dad and has experienced a difficult and unsettled start to life. Her family faces ongoing challenges, including health and financial pressures, which can make daily life feel overwhelming.

With limited wider support around her, Donna doesn’t always have the space or opportunity to process her feelings.

Despite this, she is a warm, kind young person who shows strength in the face of these challenges.

Meet Isaac & Asha, aged 8 & 10

Isaac and Asha’s family have experienced a significant loss that has had a lasting impact on their lives. Since then, their home circumstances have changed, and their mum has worked hard to keep the family supported through a very difficult period.

The family have faced ongoing instability and challenges, and are now working towards rebuilding a sense of routine and security in their new home.

Despite their mum’s best efforts, opportunities for rest, holidays, or time away together are not possible at this time.

Angie, aged 9

Angie is growing up in very challenging circumstances following the loss of her mother at a young age. She lives with her father, who has ongoing health needs, and the family face significant daily pressures.

As a result, Angie experiences responsibilities and emotional challenges that can make it difficult for her to enjoy the kind of childhood many children have.

Despite this, she continues to show strength and resilience.

She has had limited opportunities for time away, play, or shared experiences with other children.
